Bear with me now because this is a long post full of lots of pictures. Wanted to get most of them posted before the Cortona ones. Saw many sights, smelled and tasted wonderful food, and am having the time of my life.

Wow.....finally made it to Rome and what a view and what sights there are to see! The plane ride was way tooooo loooonnnggg and my knees and feet and ankles hurt. They do not make much leg room for us tall people!

Once I landed in Rome a driver from the hotel came and picked me up to drive me to the hotel. I arrived there at about 9am and quickly had a shower after being on airplanes for 15 hours. Brandon (my son) arrived at about 10:30 and we started on our venture for the day. The hotel is very nice and they are very gracious. Hotel Campo de Fiori is the name and they have hotel rooms and apartments. Our apartment is on the 2nd floor and has a kitchen, bathroom and bed/living room. It is very hot in this apartment because there is no air conditioning - once I come back from Cortona I will be staying here once again for 2 nights and I will have a hotel room complete with air conditioning and all the amenties!

Our day started with a long walk to the pantheon, forum, and collosseo. The day was very hot and we were outside all day long. We also went to the fountain of trevi and the piazza navone. Luckily along the way to one of the points we came across this fountain where we were able to cool our aching feet and just relax for awhile. Seeing these things was an all day affair and we treated ourselves with a great italian dinner.

Next day we were going to get up early to do the vatican thing, but our alarm never went off so we spent the day walking again to some shopping areas and then to an art gallery that was way up on a hill.......it never seemed like we were going to make it there because I never saw an end in sight! Finally we arrived and saw many works of art that are all preserved in this gallery. After spending a couple of hours there, we made the trek back down the hill to where we boarded a city bus to take us back to our hotel area. We had a nap and then went to a small trattoria for a traditional Italian dinner. It was fantastic!

Next day, The Vatican. We woke up early to be at the Basillica by 7:00am. This church is nothing like any other I have seen. Even the Notre Dame in Montreal does not come close in comparison. So many marble statues, painted murals, bronze carvings, etc. It amazes the eye. After touring the basillica, we then went and purchased our tickets to walk up to the dome. My son conveniently did not tell me about how many stairs we would have to climb to reach the top. 320!! A very narrow, spiral staircase leading up to the top of the dome (which is the top of the basillica) and I must say a very great place to view all of Rome. I have proof that I made it up there......notice the photo with skyline in background! Next, on to the museums of the Vatican. I have never in my life seen so many statues! So many tapestries! So many murals! So many oil paintings! And, the Sistine Chapel painted by Michealangelo is breathtaking. Too many people in the chapel though to really get to see all of it.

Things I like about Rome: the sights, the fountains, people watching, gelato, cappuccinos, authentic Italian food like my grandmother used to make, the wine, the beer, the caprese salad (fresh motzarella cheese, basil, and tomatoes with balsamic vinegar and olive oil), french bread dipped in balsamic vinegar and olive oil, the shoes, the shops, the weather minus the humidity.

Things I do not like about Rome: rude people, cobblestone roads and sidewalks (when I first sighted them I thought they were so quaint and cute.......but after walking on them for 10 hours a day, the quaintness fades with the painful, swelling, elephant looking feet and ankles and legs that show up because of the heat and hot cobblestone roads.

In Toronto

Well, the first leg of the trip has passed....I have made it to Toronto airport feeling a little refreshed as I had a good nap on the flight. Now just a 2 hour layover and then just another 9 hours on another plane! I am going to try and sleep as much as possible so that I can survive the first day there without feeling tired. I don't know what my son has planned for the day....hopefully nothing that is too far of walking distance. I plan to get to my hotel, shower, change clothes and be on our way to sightseeing. Maybe not the Vatican the first day....maybe the colliseum ruins and some churches..maybe some shopping!

I am feeling that I may have packed too much stuff in my carry-ons because my shoulders are hurtin' now. I never got the "pack light" thing to a science!

Our Day At The Lake

A couple of weekends ago we spent the day at the lake with my parents and my sister and her husband. The weather forecast for the day wasn't looking good but we went anyway. Well, when we arrived there it turned out to be a great day full of sunshine and warm lake water - 75 degrees to swim in! This was a day on the lake to celebrate my mom's birthday for this year. It was a great day to be on a boat!

I hope we have many more times to share on this boat.....it seats up to 16 people!! Maybe they can bring it up to Canada and enjoy our 60 degree lake water that is glacier fed! I don't think that them Americans would last!

Rome, Italy Here I Come!

Right now I should be finishing my packing, but instead I am blogging. On Tuesday morning I will be flying from Vancouver to Toronto to Rome......I can't wait! For one thing, this is something that I've thought and dreamed of for a long time and can't believe that September 3rd is already here. Another reason why I am so looking forward to going is because it is in the mid 80's there while here at home it is raining and cold. I am not going to miss the wet climate here......I am going to be able to enjoy some more sunny weather in a place that will hold many memories for me for a long time.

I will be meeting my son in Rome and for three days we will be doing all the Rome sightseeing we can fit in. Then, I'm off on a train to Cortona for my Sally Jean Alexander workshop in the hills of Tuscany. If any of you have seen the movie "Under the Tuscan Sun", this is the town that I will be visiting for 8 days. We will be making a candelabra chandelier and also going on some day trips to antique markets and such. Then, I am back to Rome to spend another two days on my own and then back home to share my stories. I only wish the flight wasn't 15 hours long!

This will be the first time that Lola will be away from me and I hope that she survives me not being at home. It is going to be a big change for her.......maybe she'll bond with the rest of the family!

So, "Ciao" baby and the next time I post I will be in Rome......

This Summer Has Been Crazy Busy!!!

I can't believe my last post was in early July.....you can tell that it's summer time or that I have just been sorely neglecting my blog and spending most of my time doing leisurely things outside. To say the least, this summer has been full of going here and there and everywhere. My youngest daughter and I spent a week in San Diego with her basketball team where they participated in a tournament. It was a great time and the sunshine couldn't have been better. Another mom and myself rented a convertible car for the week and we fully got our money's worth touring the streets and highways of San Diego. It is truly a beautiful place with many things to see and do. The beaches were exquisite and the sights unbelievable. We took little Lola (my teacup yorkie) to the "dog beach" there. When you looked out over the beach you could see hundreds of different types of dogs running around....it was truly a dogs world at that place. Lola didn't fancy the ocean much and once a wave went over her head she didn't want anything to do with the surf anymore. When we tried to get her to go in again she ran the other way! There were some other yorkies that she was curious about so they played together for awhile. She's not around any of her type of breed so it was nice to see her interact with dogs her size. 

Once back from San Diego it was time for our annual camping trip at Chilliwack Lake. This is a lake 40 minutes from our home and we truly enjoy going there. We go with another family who has a boat so for a week straight there is nothing but eating and tubing! We lucked out with the weather and enjoyed sunshine for the whole week. Sitting around the campfire telling stories and playing games and then hitting the sack to prepare ourselves for another day of fun.

My youngest daughter and I just returned home from Oregon this past weekend after spending a few days there visiting and celebrating my mom's birthday. For a treat we took her to Ruthie B's in Springfield and had lunch and shopped. That place is truly packed to the rafters with antiques, antiques, antiques. I just love going there everytime I visit my parents. I am going to have to make a special trip in December to see what Christmas goodies they have there!

Back At Home

Well, I am finally back at home after being away for two weeks. Things haven't changed here and sorry to say that the laundry, dishes, and cleaning still awaited me at home. So, after unpacking my luggage and starting the endless loads of laundry, I set out to find places for my newly purchased finds from Oregon. I am shifting a lot of different things around in my house to accommodate room for the "new" items. I am loving the tall black ladder that I got with the deep shelves to hold my quilt collection. 

I also washed all of the red transferware items and will now have to purchase some plates holders so that I can hang them on the dining room wall. I am going to have to think real hard on how to configure them in a pattern that won't look too busy. Once I have everything up on the walls I will post a picture.

The last day I was in Oregon, my mom, sis, and daughter and I took a drive into Albany to have lunch at "Loafers" and went into a few antique stores there. I wasn't really looking for anything else, but when I saw this bouncy chair in white for $20 I just had to have it. It looks so cute with this quilt thrown over the back of it on my front deck of the house. 

I just love bouncy chairs from the past because they are so mesmerizing when you are sitting in them and bouncing!

And remember that old slimy, dirty pond that had to be cleaned out before I could spruce it up? Well, take a look at it now! It is sporty brand new plants and a turtle with a soothing water sound. It is so nice to sit on the front porch swing and listen to the trickle of the water. I didn't have much hope for it in its previous state, but now I know that anything is possible with a little elbow grease!

I guess it must have been really hot in BC while I was gone because my other daughter (who was suppose to water ALL my hanging baskets) forgot to water the baskets of flowers hanging from the garage. Needless to say they are past the point of recovery and today I went to our local nursery and purchased two more to replace the sad, sad, dried up blooms of the others. But, since coming home all it has been doing has been raining! Still very muggy, but rain none the least. I hope that I will be able to get out into the yard this coming weekend to dead-head a lot of the plants and also to pressure wash both the front porch and back deck. Once this is done I can set out to decorate and hang the new porch swing I got for my birthday.

It was also time for the "summer time" haircut, so here I am with my new short trusses! At least I won't be sweatin' in the sun doing yard work!

Enjoying Mr. Sun

Yesterday I spent the day soaking up the gorgeous sunny day that we had. There was a nice breeze so it made the time laying in the sun pleasant. I pretended that I was on a beach in Mexico just like my daughter, sister and parents are doing as I type. They were in Puerta Vallarta yesterday and today they are in Mazatlan. I wish I could say that today was a nice sunny day like yesterday, but alas we are in Oregon and it is cloudy once again. I guess it is a day to venture out antiquing again - today I think I will try my luck and head to Springfield to Ruthie B's. I have heard about this place and it's tea room, so I think Lola and I will take a look!

On Monday I spent a few hours in Spencers Alley craft and antique mall in Salem and picked up some great things. I will save the pictures for a later post, but am so excited about one of the items that I got. It is another black ladder, this one is full size and it has steps that are really wide so they can be used for shelves. I am going to display my quilts on it in the living room. I can hardly wait to get home to redecorate with all of my great finds! Then after Spencers Alley it was on to another antique store in the downtown area where I found some great red transferware, some more hummel like figurines for my mom, and some skeleton keys. A great mishap happened when I reached for a red transferware plate and caused a "domino" chain of events where all the other plates around the one I wanted started falling and crashing to the ground! The shop owner was a real nice lady and said that it wasn't my fault because this one particular booth owner had displayed the plates on these collapsible holders that she does not approve of and said that there was no way to prevent what happened. So, I did not have to pay for the broken damage I caused and we also had a nice long talk about Italy and its surrounding areas. She just recently had gone there and was giving me some tips on traveling there. So, after all that excitement it was time to meet my sister for dinner. We had time to "catch up" and enjoy a barbeque meal. She was in Vegas the past weekend for a bachelorette party. Boy things have changed since I got married!

On The Hunt

Enjoying my time in Oregon....no agenda.....no timeline....no cleaning....no laundry....no responsibilities! Lovin' it! Just Rochelle time! Yesterday I ventured out to Portland again (yes, I've made the trip twice) and thought I would check out Monticello Antiques. I had expected more and was kind of let down because I didn't find anything I was on the hunt for. I did find a hummel figure for my mom, a princess tiara, and a little red nut grinder.

Now my day in Silverton was much more of a success. I found many treasures there, the Red Bench never lets me down! Here is a red stool and a black ladder. I plan on using the ladder in our bathroom as a towel rack and the stool will go in my kitchen.

Look at this great vintage picnic basket, some red transferware plates, a cute dutch girl, another hummel figurine for my mom, and a cute tulip bowl......

And, I was really happy to find some old chandelier crystals to bring with me to Italy to adorn the candelabra that I will be making. Also found the great vintage sprinkler that they are hanging from!

I think that most of the things I have adorning my home have come from Oregon from the many times that I have visited my parents house and gone antiquing. I just love more of the vintage look rather than the modern look that is in the department or furniture stores. Vintage just has more of a cozy, homey and warm feeling to it rather than the cold feeling I get when I am around modern things. Don't get me wrong, I love organization, but finding old vintage boxes to put things in to clear up clutter is more my style.

So, off I go to find some more treasures! 

Birthday Girls

The other night we had a nice birthday celebration at the Roadhouse Grill in Salem, Oregon. A couple of weeks ago it was my sisters' birthday and this coming Sunday is my birthday. As you can see there is a BIG age gap - oh to be 29 again! Those days have passed me by and now I am bringing in a new year of age 46! Yuk!!! I don't like the feeling of being closer to the age of 50 than to the age of 40. It's a feeling of "where the heck did all the years go?" They seem to have flown by without me knowing about it until I take a glance at myself in the mirror - then it all becomes so real!

I am bound and determined to do lots in my future years to create memories to last a lifetime. One memory I will create is by going to Italy in September. I have always in the back of my mind wanted to visit there as my maternal grandparents came from there. It is a dream of a lifetime and it is a birthday gift to myself this year. I will be attending a workshop taught by this lady: http://www.sallyjean.com which is being held in the Tuscan area of Italy in the town of Cortona. We will be crafting a candelabra chandelier from some of the things we find at the antique markets of Cortona and also from some trinkets we will bring from home. I am looking forward to exploring the town of Cortona as well as Rome (this is where I fly into and stay for 3 days before and 2 days after Cortona). My son will be meeting me in Rome when I arrive as he is spending the summer touring Europe. I'm sure I will have many photos to share from this experience and probably many stories too. Italy, here I come!

Farm Chicks Finds

Yes, Farm Chicks happened a while ago, but I just now have had time to post and add pictures of what I found there. I am missing a few photos of the vintage wheelbarrow and junior spreader that I got for our garden, but I will post those when I get back home from Oregon. 

Right now I am dog-sitting for my parents as they have taken my oldest daughter and youngest sister on a cruise to the Mexican Riviera. I am here for two weeks so I have a lot of time on my hands to read, relax, and do absolutely nothing. I am also enjoying some warm summer weather that they are having and visiting some of the great antique spots that they have in this area. Today I spent the day in Silverton and found some stuff at The Red Bench and another small antique store downtown. Tomorrow I think I will venture toward Portland and do some shopping at Bridgeport Village (love Anthropologie!) and also go to Monticello Antique Marketplace. If I find some great things tomorrow I will post those right away!

This Farm Chick Is Goin' Shoppin'

Today is the day!!! I can't wait to get to the fairgrounds.....I can hear many cute vintage items calling my name. Rochelle, Rochelle, Rochelle, come see me and take me home with you....I would look so cute in your house. I hope that my expectations are met when I get there and see the stuff. I'm sure it will and I'm sure there is lots to see and do. Farm Chicks look out, here I come!

Yesterday I spent the day in my most favorite store....Macy's. I love, love, love everything they have there. I bought a few things for my Italy trip in September. (Yes, I am going to Italy and can't wait. I will give more details on this trip later. It involves a workshop that is held in the northern region of Italy in a town called Cortona. It is a dream of a lifetime!) I always find neat things in Macy's and yesterday was no exception. I was only bummed because nothing was on sale, but the prices weren't too bad.
